How do you get ipod touch to just sync selected songs?

I just got a new ipod touch today. However, when I went to sync it to my itunes, it would not just sync the songs that I had checked to be synced. The options I were given was to (1) put my entire itunes library on my ipod or (2) select specific artists/playlists/genres I wanted on my ipod. Can this be changed?
